When I see this, I imagine that he is a crashed pilot wandering around aimlessly in the desert looking for help/water. After a few days, the sky begins to miraculously pour rain, just as he is about to give up hope of ever being rescued, and this picture would be his reaction to the rain.

You're actually not too far off at all; he was a combat pilot within the Calatonan joint operations unit more commonly known as The Guard of Autumn, shot down behind enemy lines during the Augustinian crisis in the Straits of Gibraltar. Most of his scarring comes as a direct result of his mistreatment by his captors-
